In our week 13 class, we searched about global warming on COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English—https://corpus.byu.edu/coca/)
The graph above shows that the word “global warming” was most used through 2005~09, and the word most appeared in blogs and websites. I was surprised to know this, because I thought it would show up more in news articles.
The graph below shows the detailed information between 2005~09. The word most appeared in 2007, which is 1.5 times that of 2005. I searched about global related things that happened during that period.
In 2005, the Kyoto Protocol entered into force with 192 Parties. The Kyoto Protocol operationalizes the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) by committing industrialized countries and economies in transition to limit and reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in accordance with agreed individual targets. The Convention itself only asks those countries to adopt policies and measures on mitigation and to report periodically.
In 2007, the G8 Summit was held in Heiligendamm. The EU, Canada, and Japan agreed to "seriously consider a decision by the EU, Canada, and Japan that includes at least a halving of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) and the 5th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CMP5) to the Kyoto was held in Copenhagen, in 2009.
These are the main contents of the Copenhagen Accord;
(1) Limit the increase in global temperature to 2°C or less.
(2) Developed countries and developing countries are to decide on targets to be reduced by 2020 and actions for reduction, respectively, and submit them by the end of January 2010.
(3) The reduction targets of developed countries and the results of reduction actions of developing countries are to be measured, reported, and verified (MRV) according to the guidelines to be established by the COP (including existing ones).
(4) Developed countries jointly set a target of $30 billion for 2010-2012 and $100 billion annually by 2020 to mobilize support for global warming countermeasures in developing countries.
After looking up for these information, I suspect more people showed interest in global warming since many conferences on global warming held between 2005 and 2009. Despite the fact that global warming has been a hot topic for such a long time, I think global warming countermeasures do not seem to be working. What do you all think about this?
